Are Ambigrams Dead?

The ambigram world has been pretty quiet lately- many of the sites & blogs dedicated to this unique art have not updated in years, or are gone entirely. The craze brought on by the success of Angels & Demons & The DaVinci Code has long since died down.

I haven’t been active either- to be honest, I’ve moved on. I haven’t had much ambigram interest or inspiration lately and that doesn’t look like it will change any time soon. But I enjoyed it while it lasted. Thanks to Dan Brown, John Langdon, Scott Kim, NagFa and everyone else who has made this alphabetical art what it is.

But if ambigrams make a comeback in the future, I’ll be there!

Ambigram Commissions Closed Indefinitely

I’ve had a few emails requests for ambigram commissions over the past couple of months- while I appreciate your interest, I will not be taking any more commissions. This is mainly due to a lack of time and a lack of interest/inspiration in ambigrams as of late.

Not to mention the fact that 80% of the people who have written me expressing interest in a custom design have disappeared after I sent them a sketch. Thanks a lot, freeloaders! :p

freed

It’s been a while since my last ambigram; inspiration has been hard to find lately.

This one went very smoothly- I wouldn’t be surprised if it has already been done.

My Case Study entry for ambigram.com’s ‘Ambigrams Revealed’ book.

After watching a TV show about the universe (and not understanding most of it), I learned that dark matter was made up of two theoretical parts: Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (or WIMPs) and Massive Compact Halo Objects (or MaCHOs). That served as inspiration for this large ambigram.

The biggest hurdle was turning ‘halo’ into ‘interacting’, but other than that it went surprisingly smoothly.
